My awesome Teacher Candidate, Kyra, has been teaching my grade 4's about procedure writing. Today she tried an idea that everyone loved! First, she created several little drawings using a variety of shapes and symbols.
Then, she had the children pair off with someone they each work well with. Every person got a different picture. They sat back-to-back and described the steps in order so the partner could recreate the picture without looking. They used sequence words like "first", "then", "next", "finally".
Finally, they completed a reflection on strategies used to help the partner be successful.
