A Peek at my Week - November 24th

Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends.  (I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I was a bit envious of your upcoming holiday.  It's a full week up here.)  I am linking up with Jennifer of Mrs. Laffin's Laughings for A Peek at my Week.
It's going to be another busy week in Grade 4.  For Literacy we are going to be reading "The Wretched Stone" by Chris Van Allsburg for our shared reading.  We are going to do a QMI chart for this text too.  This is an excellent text for making inferences!  Our Paragraph of the Week is about a special talent or something you are good at.  My Little Darlings are getting really good at writing strong topic sentences.  We will now focus on closing sentences.  :)
In Math we are learning those pesky times tables.  We are going to read "Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream" by Liza Woodruff to see how much quicker it is to multiply than repeat add.  We are going to write multiplication riddles.  Later in the week we will use base ten blocks to multiply.  See this post here.
In Science we will be continuing to learn about rocks and minerals.  We are going to make Mineral Posters on the SMART Board.  We will also do a rocks and minerals Jeopardy game.
In Dance they have created their own dance in groups of 4.  It is so fun watching them develop these!  We will be presenting on Thursday.

Two Great Things!

Hi Bloggy Friends!
I hope you aren't too disappointed in my blogging or lack thereof.  Can you say Tired with a capital "T"?  I have had this cough-cold-hangy-on-thing for over two weeks now. I just can't seem to shake it.
But on the good side... I was sooooooo fortunate as to win Meg at The Teacher Studio's grade 5/6 Giveaway!  I have had so much fun choosing, receiving, and perusing all of these great teachers' products.  Thank you everyone!  I will be sure to highlight some of these products in upcoming posts.
And my second great thing (that is great for you too!) is... Have you been following Krista of Creative Clips' super cute Unwrap Your Freebie clipart?  Wait until you see today's freebie!  Absolutely adorable!  Click on the picture to download your copy and then go back to Krista's blog to get the last two presents.  :)
Have a great night!

Book Club Math!

I'm linking up with Holly at Fourth Grade Flipper for Tried It Tuesday.
This is Stephanie at Teaching in Room 6's idea and I love it!!  At my school, we always receive way too many Book Club Order forms.  Well, I saved them up.  Then I printed Stephanie's activity that you can find here for free.  My Grade 4's worked with a partner but they each recorded the specific books, quantities, and totals that were as close to $200 as possible but not over it.  Every single student was engaged for the duration of this activity.  Here are a few pics of my lovelies hard at work.

Here's hoping you have a fantastic night!

Remembrance Day

We had our Remembrance Day Assembly at school today.  (Yes, we had school.  No garbage pick up, banks, or mail.)  Our assembly was beautiful as always.  Our school has a large population of military families.  It is so powerful to see all of the parents in uniform.  There were close to 200 parents in attendance.  The children were amazing!  They were quiet and respectful.  They always seem to come through on this important occasion.  Here's a video we watched at our assembly.  Isn't it great?
On Saturday, I went shopping in the northern United States with a bus of teachers (great time!) and we were surprised that there were no poppies.  I hadn't realized that they are now a Canadian/British tradition.
Here is one more of my favourite Remembrance Day videos for you.

Short and Sweet - OQI

Well, we read the very touching "A Bear In War".  It is such a perfect story for Remembrance Day.  After reading it, my lovelies went to their desks with three Post-It Notes.  On one they put what they Observed, on the second they recorded a Question they may have, and on the last they wrote what they Inferred.  Ta da!

A Peek at My Week

I'm linking up with Jennifer at Mrs. Laffin's Laughings for A Peek at My Week.
I really really enjoyed my extra hour this weekend so I know this is going to be a great week.  First off...  I finished my progress reports!  Yippee!!!  Then I created a powerpoint for introducing area to my Grade 4 friends.  I will tell you more about that next time.

For our shared reading, we will be using the book A Bear in War.  This is an excellent book for Remembrance Day.  It is about a little girl who gave her dad her teddy bear to keep him safe during World War I.  This is based on a true story and the actual teddy bear is on display at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.  (If this book sounds familiar, Anne from Looking From Third to Fourth did an excellent Must Read Mentor Linky post on this last weekend.  Check out her post for way more information.)

We are also going to be writing a descriptive paragraph for our Paragraph of the Week.  On Friday, with no electricity and the children fuelled by sugar, we did the Monster Dice Drawing that you can get here.  We are going to use this monster for our descriptive paragraph.  I'll share some of them later in the week.  That's all for now!  I hope your weekend was amazing!  Have a great Monday.

November Currently

Happy Saturday!  I am linking up with Farley at Oh' Boy 4th Grade for her November Currently.  I cannot even believe that it is November already!
It feels like we have had way too much rain this week.  We probably really haven't, but we did have a full day of indoor recess on Hallowe'en of all days.  Can you even imagine those excited little people not being able to go outside all day?  Zoiks!

Progress Reports are due on Monday but there is no way I was giving up my Saturday run/walk/brunch with my family.  Mission accomplished.

Here is my pin for Pecan Pie Bars.  They are delicious!  Enjoy your extra hour of sleep!
