Multiplying and Eating, Drinking & Linking

Here is a super simple way of multiplying in an easy, hands-on way.  I can't believe I hadn't come across this idea before.

I have always used arrays to demonstrate multiplication of math facts up to 9 X 9 but I would draw the dots or use actual objects to represent each number - didn't work very well with large numbers. .

At my math course, we used base ten blocks to multiply 22 X 26.  Make a rectangle with 22 units one direction and 26 the other way.  Essentially, we made our array out of base ten blocks.  This did not take long at all as we filled in as many hundreds blocks as we could first, then tens, then ones.
You can clearly see that we have 4 hundreds, 16 tens, and 12 ones = 572  Easy as pie!  Then, we used grid paper to solve 15 X 12.  It was very easy to draw the base ten blocks on the grid paper.  Ta da!

    Just wanted to provide you with an brief update on the revised Social Studies (1 to 6), History-Geography (7&8) Curriculum…..

    The new document has been released and is available in digital format through the following link. Please ensure that it is the 2013 revised version.

    At this point we are moving forward with the following, most of which has been directed by the Ministry:

    1) Full implementation of the document September 2014-15 school year

    2) Partial implementation for the 2013-2014 school year with a focus on an awareness of the overall document including the general/specific expectations as well as the following areas introduced in the document:

    · Citizenship Education Framework

    · Concepts of Disciplinary Thinking

    · Big Ideas (Enduring Understandings) and their relationship to Concepts of Disciplinary Thinking

    · Inquiry Process

    3) The Literacy/Numeracy Consultants & Teachers have been given a brief introduction and are willing to assist school – they are presently reviewing to determine how they can support us as a system.

    Further details of the implementation are continuing to be discussed and a synopsis will be presented to the Administrators at the August Conference along with a printed copy of the document for each school. For those that prefer – you may want to download a digital copy for the conference. We were informed that the Ministry is sending each school a box (20 copies) the last week of August.
